What is sovereign AI in Australia?

Sovereign AI means the models, data and logs sit in Australia inside an environment the agency controls, with access decided by its own policies and identity provider. No prompt or record is processed offshore or retained by a vendor for training.

What does the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government require?

The Digital Transformation Agency's policy asks Commonwealth agencies to name accountable officials for AI, publish an AI transparency statement and manage the risk of each use case. We help agencies keep a use-case register and design each build so the transparency statement can describe it accurately.

Can AI make automated decisions about citizens?

AI can prepare and recommend, and any decision the law requires a person to make stays with that person. Since the Robodebt Royal Commission, we treat automated decision-making as high risk by default and document who decides at every step.

Can AI triage ministerial correspondence and FOI requests?
