The critical design decision: human-in-the-loop. The agent recommends actions, but a human engineer reviews and approves before any fix is applied. This is not optional for us -- it is a foundational architectural principle. Why Microsoft Teams Integration Changed Everything
One of the biggest lessons we learned early: if the AI does not live where your team already works, nobody uses it.

The time reduction is the headline number, though the gains that matter more are these:
Consistency. A senior engineer having a good day might investigate thoroughly. A junior engineer on a Friday afternoon might miss things. The AI agent follows the same rigorous process every single time.
Documentation. Every investigation produces a structured report with evidence. No more "I fixed it but I don't remember what I did." This matters enormously for compliance and knowledge transfer.
Learning loop. The agent stores investigation history. When a similar issue appears, it draws on prior investigations to resolve faster. This compounds over time, and the agent gets better the longer it runs.

3. Human-in-the-Loop Is a Feature, Not a Limitation
Some vendors position full automation as the goal. We disagree strongly. For support investigations, the human review step:

- Builds engineer understanding of the codebase and systems
- Maintains accountability -- a human signs off on every change
- Enables learning -- when engineers correct the agent, it improves
As multi-agent AI systems become more capable, the human-in-the-loop principle becomes more important, not less.
4. Investigation History Is Your Competitive Moat
Every investigation the agent performs gets stored with full context: the symptoms, the evidence gathered, the root cause found, and the resolution applied. After a few months of operation, this becomes an extraordinarily useful knowledge base.
New team members can search past investigations. The agent itself draws on this history to resolve recurring issues faster. And when you need to demonstrate compliance or audit your support processes, every step is documented.
5. Scope It Tightly at First
We did not try to build an agent that handles everything. We started with one specific class of support tickets -- data integrity issues in our reporting system. Once that worked reliably, we expanded to API errors, then authentication issues, then performance problems.
This incremental approach is consistent with what we have seen across enterprise projects. The build vs buy decision should always start with a narrow, high-value use case before expanding scope.

Choose your AI backbone carefully. We use Claude AI for its strong reasoning capabilities and ability to maintain context across complex, multi-step investigations. The model needs to handle long context windows (investigating an issue might require reading hundreds of log lines) and produce structured, evidence-based outputs.
Connect to real data sources. The agent is only as good as the systems it can access. At minimum, it needs read access to your logging infrastructure, database (read-only queries), and version control system. Each additional data source makes the agent more capable.
Design the output format. A wall of text is not useful. We structured our investigation reports with clear sections: Summary, Evidence Found, Probable Root Cause, Recommended Resolution, and Confidence Level. This consistency makes it easy for engineers to review quickly.
Plan for the learning loop. Store every investigation. Tag outcomes (correct, partially correct, needed adjustment). Use this data to improve the agent's investigation patterns over time.
